The Fred and Sara Machetanz Papers consist of correspondence, drafts, mock-ups, and other material related to four books by Fred and Sara Machetanz (Robbie and the Sled Dog Race, A Puppy Named Gih, The 50 Stone Lithographs of Fred Machetanz, and The Alaskan Paintings of Fred Machetanz); oversized proof sheets for the books Panuk, Eskimo Sled Dog and Where Else but Alaska; and more than 1400 photographs of Alaskan subjects taken in the 1930s-1950s.

Fred Machetanz was born in Kenton, Ohio, on February 20, 1908. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees from Ohio State University. Machetanz first came to Alaska in 1935 when his uncle Charles Traeger, owner of a trading post in Unalakleet, offered him a free six week trip. He stayed for two years because he was interested in the landscape in Alaska. Sara Burleson Machetanz (June 25, 1918- ) was born in Johnson City, Tennessee and was educated at East Tennessee State College. She is known for writing books and producing films about Eskimo life in Alaska, working alongside her illustrator husband, Frederick Machetanz (now deceased).
